Life

If you could stop every atom in its position and direction and if your mind could comprehend all the actions thus suspended, then if you were really, really good at algebra you could write the formula for all the future.
from Arcadia a play by Tom Stoppard

A lot of us go through our lives either consciously or sub-consciously believing the gist of the above statement either partially or in its entirety. We try and plan our next second, minute, hour, day, year and our future with the help of trivial tools like alarms, planners, schedulers, resolutions and plans without realizing the real deal is living for the moment and enjoying the glorious uncertainties of life. Either all of that or we just suck at algebra.

Tom is giving out the skill-sets for "God". Either you are one, or you'll have to resign yourself to "enjoying" the uncertainties of life!

Flew over my head, this one :p

I get it! I totally do.Well, i can't explain it to you.You have to see it for yourself.

i would go with the 'suck-at-algebra' thing :P

Good one! :)

I am too good at algebara though! No, really! I'm fantastic in Maths! ;)

@Jinguchakka Cant agree with you more

@Casablanca and another one flew over the cuckoo's nest, you should be ashamed even totti could follow this one ;)

@totti Yup it is kinda hard to explain alrite

@Mahima Welcome to the club :)

@Medha That s largely thanks to your Indian genes, that skill set comes inbulit with those kinda genes ;)

Oh roobish! Totti's comment makes it very obvious this flew over his head too... he's just too chicken to accept it :p

I think u r reading too much into his statement. Atleast I cant intrepret all this from his sentence. He is just trying to confuse ppl like Totti always does with some random dreams

loved the quote...
made me think how pointless life is...when it can end the very next second
for many ppl it does!

Amen to that!

I think what Stoppard is saying is that life unfolds according to certain mathematical rules, and if you are intelligent enough to comprehend these rules (i.e. you are God), you can even predict the future. What Rohan is saying is we should not be compelled to follow life by any rules and just go with the flow. Unless there is something deeper, I think this is it. In short, what Jinguchakka said.

Yo Casa! you are not just satisfied by peacefully ignoring my gregariousness and such noble qualities.I would be glad to go over the quote in gory boring detail.
And, like many people you would probably miss out the meaning i place in between lines.Subtle but distinct!! :)
I will take roobish as a compliment.Happy?

Rohan - for the prev post.Ob! man! i had to take side of the suppressed.People were stoning that guy in the comments section.Whether he deserved it or not is a different question. It was out of pity rather than empathy :p

Future is nothing but a delayed present. Live in the "here" and live in the "now"

Living for the moment and taking life as it comes is my mantra too. Though I am not too bad at algebra either..:)

Okay Totti, calm down. Dont get so hyper... I believe you :)

Peace Out.

we plan and we plan and we plan.....math skills don't get you far with the uncertainties of life.

@Casablanca and Totti I will let you settle this out in the open mnao a mano

@Demi Goddezz Guess its an eternal battle b/w the plans we have for life and the plans life has in store for us

@Point 5 So how come Casa is claiming Tom managed to confuse totti with this one?

@Koi Pahailee Odd that you mention that coz something that happened today made me realize the truth in that staement even more than b4

@shruti :)

@Anarkist You are kinda right but just that my chain of thoughts were totally given arising after I read Tom's statement

@Subash How can I not 'respect thy Autoritah' ;)

@RT Blame that on your Indian genes :)

@M But still some ppl try and live their lives and relationships as an equation dont they?

have to tell you rohan, I read your post three times, everytime its the algebra that gets to me.. or rather doesn't get to me. Why do you watching such random plays anyway?
:)
J/k
just as a note though
alarms rarely work if there is nothing good to look forward too, or to fear..

so we can try and try and try, yet.....

@ligne I think all that Rem Steele is messing with your mind ;), I came acrss that passage in a book that I read recently (no random plays for me trust me)

@Shivangi That would make you a memeber of the majority group if its any consolation

@M Blame it on human nature
